My Daily Search for Inner Peace
2018

Sharon H.J. Cheng

My work is influenced by the ancient Chinese philosophy of ‘Chi’, also called Energy, spirit or soul. The shape and form of the Circles are the totems of my recent work, because they represent positive energies. All the circles in various phrases and expressions in my work show the intimate echoes of my autobiographic reflections of personal sentiment. To me, the Circle conveys the energies of peace and harmony; by incorporating them within my artistic practice, I want to pursue the positive dialogues between my artistic creation and my life.

As a visual artist focusing in painting, I am very excited to have this opportunity to transfer my concept usually presented in a two-dimensional painting into a three dimensional space. My project is called ‘My Daily Search for Inner Peace’. This project involves painting and installation. Amongst the developing civilizations, the concept of “the twelve” has been inundated with our daily lives. This concept reflects the cosmic order and concepts of time and space. Through the preparation for this installation, it has become clear for me personally that TIME is the essence of understanding. TIME makes us understanding the great universe surrounding us and about ourselves. It is TIME makes us feel the inner peace by the huge or minute circumstantial satisfaction.

This circular space is formed with 12 sets of paper panels hanging from the ceiling (a painted panel and a plain panel as a set, 12 painted panels facing the audience and 12 plain panels facing the inner circle,), 12 inches above the floor. They represent the twelve months in the year. On the floor, 24 rocks representing each hour of the day are placed under and in between each pair of paper panels. A round shaped shallow dish containing clear water in the center of the circle on the floor is to strengthen the simplified space and to draw attention of the spirit of tranquility.

The audience is encouraged to enter the circular space. Combining the concepts of the circle, hint of TIME and number twelve, I invite the audience to join me to ponder over the subject of inner peace.
