Sharon H.J. Cheng's artistic practice unfolds at the intersection of Eastern philosophy and contemporary visual language. Born in Taiwan and based in upstate New York, she draws upon a rich cultural heritage and decades of artistic exploration to create works that resonate with both meditative stillness and dynamic energy.
Working in oil painting, sumi-e, installation, and mixed media, Cheng investigates the invisible forces that connect human experience with the natural world. Inspired by the concept of Chi, her compositions evoke movement, balance, and transformation through layered color, rhythmic forms, and recurring circular motifs that symbolize wholeness and continuity.
Rather than depicting specific narratives, Cheng's work creates contemplative environments that encourage reflection and presence. Her art invites viewers to engage with subtle exchanges of energy and emotion, offering moments of quiet awareness within an increasingly accelerated world.
A Starr Foundation grantee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a New York Foundation for the Arts MARK ’09 artist, and a CRNY/AEP artist, Cheng has exhibited widely in regional, national, and international venues. Her work serves as a bridge between cultures, traditions, and contemporary perspectives, expressing a universal search for harmony, connection, and inner balance.
